Live-streaming and hosting is naturally also a part of my work, and I have a huge passion for my work in these areas too. Sinema Showoff!
I spearheaded the launch of Sinema's Discord server, which we dubbed the "Sinema Disco(rd) Club" as a way to connect people in the film community. The biggest event we held was Sinema Showoff! where we screened short films by up and coming filmmakers. I hosted every session including the post-screening Q&A with the filmmakers themselves. We screened a total of 13 short films over four online sessions, to approximately 100 viewers.
Sinema Showoff! first began in the days of Sinema Old School — a community theatre which operated from 2007 to 2012. Almost a decade after Sinema Old School closed its doors, its spirit of giving a platform to budding filmmakers still lives on.
Red Hot
Red Dot
I joined Sinema.SG as a writer in March 2021. Fast forward a few months later, I was roped in to host a brand new live show called "Red Hot Red Dot". The one hour weekly show focused on discussing topics related to Asian cinema and to help bridge the gap between Asian films and mainstream audiences. The aim of the show was to help make these films accessible to audiences and to make people aware of the good quality films we have here in Asia, We later moved the show to a pre-recorded format to condense the conversation and increase the replay value for viewers who may otherwise miss the live show.
Streaming
on Twitch
The COVID-19 pandemic severely affected the level of social interaction I had in 2020, thus I began live-streaming on Twitch in December to connect with people and build a community. It was a natural extension of my experience with radio and within three weeks I became a Twitch Affiliate. I felt the need to use my platform for something bigger than myself, so I ran a 10 hour-long charity stream for Take This - a mental health support organisation targeting gamers. With the help of the community and many familiar faces from the industry, we raised close to $150 and spread awareness of this amazing cause to hundreds of viewers.
Hosting
Over the last few years, I have had the opportunity to gain experience in hosting and emceeing. I have hosted various live events, ranging from prom nights to school events and even weddings! I'm comfortable being on stage and in front of a crowd. I also always make sure to be as prepared as I can before hosting any event. I have not only hosted events in English, but also in Mandarin!
