RADIO

Growing up listening to YES 933 and Class 95, I have always had an interest in broadcast media and specifically radio. When I was 14, the sounds of stations like 987FM became the soundtrack to every study session and I fell deeper in love with the medium. Since then, I have set my sights on any opportunity available for me to gain a greater insight and experience in the radio industry. Over the last few years, I have been blessed with many of such opportunities that have strengthened both my knowledge of the industry as well as my practical skills needed in the field.

Mediacorp indiego

indiego is a brand new radio station by Mediacorp run by our local musicians. I had the privilege of working alongside big names including Charlie Lim and Gareth Fernandez to get the station up

and running. I was often referred to as Gareth, our station manager's, "second-in-charge" and I helped out with anything ranging from outlining show formats and managing the musicians who host our shows, to music scheduling and liaising with music labels and station sponsors.

The most exciting project I worked on during my time at indiego was the debut of indiego RECESS, a series of intimate, stripped-down performances by local musicians. Our first show featured Jean Seizure and Marian Carmel and was broadcast live on TikTok to hundreds of viewers. As a long time supporter of our local music scene, I firmly believe live performances bring out the best in our artists and elevate the music beyond what studio recordings can do. indiego RECESS is a completely unique concept here in Singapore and our hope is that it helps promote our local music scene and prove just how talented our Singaporean musicians are.

GOLD 905

One of the greatest radio opportunities I have ever had was the chance to intern at Mediacorp's GOLD 905 in 2018. I had a first-hand look at how radio functioned, both on and off air.

In the mornings, I was a producer for Live! with Mike Kasem and Vernetta Lopez. I sourced for content for the DJs to talk about on-air, edited their daily podcasts, set up Facebook livestreams, and produced their trailers after each show.

In the afternoons, I did more administrative tasks. This included events management, graphic design, social media content creation, liaising with clients, competitor analysis, and much more.

My experience at GOLD 905 gave me a very well-rounded view of all the aspects that make radio possible, as well as being able to directly contribute to these factors. I also honed my abilities and grew my expertise in both on-air and off-air skills, such as hosting, production, and media management.

Mass
Communication

Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Mass Communication course has always been the top in the industry for training radio professionals, thus I knew it was where I belonged. During my time in Mass Comm, I completed two Radio Production modules and had the chance to interview the likes of resident 987FM DJ Joakim Gomez and founder of The Dorsal Effect Kathy Xu.

Mediacorp
Internship

I was given the chance to intern at Mediacorp for two weeks at the end of 2015 as part of a school experience programme and along with two other classmates, we were stationed at the StyleXStyle office in the publishing department. We did everything from paperwork to advertising and occasionally we would help at roadshows where we sold the magazines 8Days and i-Weekly with exclusive goodie bags.

Radio
Journalism
Project

As part of our 2014 Project Work module in secondary school, I took on a Radio Journalism project with four other schoolmates. Led by professionals from Singapore Press Holdings, we set out to create a podcast for our school's heritage room. We were tasked with extensive research, writing a script, and recording it like a radio show. For our efforts, we were presented with the Outstanding Special Projects award for the year. The final product is property of the school and we no longer have access to it, but our research and scripts are free to view via the link below.

Singapore
Media
Academy

In 2012, I took on a Basic Radio Presentation Workshop organised by Singapore Media Academy. The full-day class taught us how to write basic scripts for a radio show and also how to present them. At the end of the course, we were awarded a certificate for our participation.
